How much do STD tests cost out of pocket?

For patients not covered by health insurance, STD tests done at a doctor’s office usually cost $50 to $200 each, depending on the test.

For people who would prefer to access private STD testing and do not have insurance, they may expect to pay $50 to $150 per test, depending on the disease, or a package of seven to 10 STD tests, including HIV, for about $300 to $400.

For patients covered by health insurance, tests sometimes are done at no charge to the patient. If not, typical out-of-pocket expenses consist of a laboratory copay of $10 to $30 per test.

Usually students can obtain discounted STD testing at their university health center.

For FDA approved HIV tests, you will usually need to spend between $45 and $60. Many insurance plans cover tests for some STDs as part of a yearly or routine wellness exam, or for high-risk patients, such as those with multiple partners, or if ordered by a doctor as a result of symptoms.

How long can an STD go undetected?

STDs can go unnoticed for up to 10 years. For example those who have HIV may not experience symptoms for 10 years.

Infections like herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea can be spread even if there are no symptoms. That said, there are some common symptoms of STDs, like itching, a burning sensation when you pee, and unusual and bad-smelling discharge. If you’re noticing any of these, then you need to see a health care provider right away.

How do you check for STDs at home?

You can easily check for STDs at home using an at-home STD test.

How long does STD show up?

It can take 3 months for HIV to show up on a test according to Planned Parenthood.

For other STDs, it may take a matter of days to a few weeks for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis to show up.
